hat is Echo Hill? It is a summer camp which has been dedicated for over fifty years to helping childrenGet Close to Nature! have a happy, exciting and meaningful experience of living with others in the out-of-doors.

It is close to nature and isolated from strenuous city life and the pressures of the school year; a situation in which a learning experience takes place most easily. Echo Hill is a summer place where a child may experience fun, freedom and adventure in abundance with a program which is broad enough to challenge and satisfy the needs of today’s active youth. The camp is staffed by mature counselors who stress the health, safety and individual needs of each camper. Echo Hill fosters an unusual amount of love and kindness which leads to lasting friendships and unforgettable memories. It is, above all else, a place where a child may practice the inalienable right of youth; to be free and happy.

LOCATION   Back to Top

Echo Hill Camp is beautifully situated upon a bluff sloping down to a mile of sandy beach on Maryland’s Eastern Shore of the Chesapeake Bay. The area is rural and sparsely populated, but within easy reach of Washington, Philadelphia, Baltimore, and New York.

The camp is located on a 350 acre farm consisting of sunny fields and woodlands. It is a rustic camp with most campers living in large platform tents. Each tent or cabin has one or to two counselors in residence with the group. The total enrollment is 145 campers which provides an excellent ratio of one counselor for every three campers.

HEALTH   Back to Top

Health is paramount. A registered nurse is in residence in our health center.

Dr. Wayne Benjamin, the camp physician, has offices located at the Kent and Queen Annes Hospital in Chestertown. The excellent facilities of this hospital are eleven miles from camp and can be reached quickly if necessary.

Echo Hill has established a reputation for its unusually homelike food. Dieticians have planned the balanced menus and there is an abundance of fresh vegetables, fruit, meat, poultry, and dairy products obtained from local farms. "Honey" our faithful cook for many years prepares her "Eastern Shore" recipes and serves the meals family style.

The climate is invigorating, with lots of sunshine. There is a supervised rest hour after the noon meal and at night the campers get plenty of sleep. Extra rest periods and food are arranged for campers as needs are observed.

THE STAFF  Back to Top

Meet Our Excellent Camp StaffThe camp staff is one of Echo Hill’s greatest strengths. They are innovative and creative people who love children and provide excellent instruction and leadership. Most of them are college students, recent graduates, or professionals in education or recreation. They return to the staff year after year, most having spent happy childhood summers as campers at Echo Hill.

OUR PROGRAM  Back to Top

Echo Hill strives to provide an atmosphere conducive to the creative expression of self; to create an atmosphere in which a camper becomes aware of, and learns a healthy respect for his environment; and to provide an atmosphere in which a child, for his own personal reasons, seeks to acquire new physical or artistic skills. Our program offers a broad range of activities&emdash; indeed, the imagination and creativity of the staff are the only limits to the variety of the program. Daytime activity is organized on a free-choice basis, with the exception of instructional swim, to which each camper is assigned for one period on weekday. Instruction for all activities includes that for beginners and campers of all ages are encouraged to try everything. Our program is very flexible and is designed to match the natural, free and non-competitive atmosphere at Echo Hill.
