Hello Echo Hill campers, parents, alumni and friends!
This simple definition, while accurate, leaves out the very essence of what camp actually means. It is very hard to define but there are some universal descriptions of what camp means to people that only those who are lucky enough to be able to attend camp can understand. No matter which camp you attend, whether its for 2 weeks or all summer, when you first turned 7 or found camp at 16; it tends to define who we are as a person. There are very few institutions in the world that can really shape a being the way a camp can. Here is a quick list of basic things that help define what camp is:
2. A place where you can explore different selves and decide who you want to be.
3. Camp tends to eliminate the haves and haves not.
4. A place where you can learn how to do different activities that don’t exist where you live.
5. Boost self esteem, body image and communication skills.
6. Foster a love for nature, the outdoors and wildlife.
7. Community values.
8. Understand the meaning of true friendships.
9. Great respect for others and ourselves.
10. Love life to the fullest.
We all believe that Echo Hill in particular is the best summer camp out there! We offer a unique place to grow up and think that our little slice of heaven on the Chesapeake Bay is the absolute best place to spend your summer. Personally, I define camp as home. Not only is camp where I literally grew up but it’s also where I found who I was and who I wanted to be. It’s where I cultivated my morals, values and work ethic. (Of course my Mom & Dad were a major part of that too;) Echo Hill camp is so much more than the definition. It’s so much more than I can write here in our very first blog post. ever. But the best definition might be our mission statement or maybe as simply put in my Grandmother's words
in the midst of a changing world.
Contentment, Beauty, and Friendship.

Echo Hill -a summer place
By Pauline Van Norman Rice
our summer evaluation. We believe the following statements are some of the best ways to “define” us.
“This was a huge step for my daughter in that she had never spent that much time away from us and she did not know anyone going into it. This was her choice and I am really proud of her for wanting that. Echo Hill was an amazing experience for her and I feel like she grew up in those two weeks and in ways that every parent hopes: increased self confidence, independence, healthy respect and love of nature and the outdoors, forming positive friendships, meeting new people, being active and eating wholesome foods, and interacting with interesting and fun-loving adults as role models. She will be back next summer!”
“I was amazed with the increased knowledge, self esteem and overall calm of my child when we picked her up. The camp vibe was also remarkable...as I said earlier; I felt that she was part of a family. This was truly an amazing experience for our daughter and we are so thankful.”
“The bonds that are created at Echo Hill, whether between campers or camper to counselor, are phenomenal. They build a child's self-confidence and assurance, which carries through when they return home.”
“Thank you for doing all you do. Our daughter is at her happiest at Echo Hill in the 3 summers she has been so far. It has really boosted her self esteem, and she is so happy with the wonderful friends she has made. Camp has also made her more independent, which is a source of pride to her as well”
“Just wanted to say that my son LOVES EHC, He's told me that 'Echo Hill is where I feel the most me.' What more can be said? Thank you!!!”
“My daughter refers to Echo Hill as her 'happy place.' Hard to compete with that but, as parents, we love to see her growth in confidence and independence. Her goal is to one day be a counselor at Echo Hill. We respect that she wants to give back to the Echo Hill experience that has given her so much. Thank you.”
